Even the smallest interactions with our neighbours and community can have a significant effect on not only our short-term health, but our long-term mental and physical health.

In a study published last year in Plos Medicine researchers identified that maintaining social activity helps lower the risk of developing dementia along with other major preventative benefits for issues like depression, cardiovascular disease, cognitive deterioration, decline in mobility and increased risk of early death.

With feelings of loneliness particularly prevalent amongst groups such as young mothers, empty nesters, and the elderly, the last few months of social isolation is estimated to have had serious health implications across the board.

Ingenia Rental resident Sinnika Smith said that she’s always liked to help people and that her focus has recently been on supporting the mental health of her neighbours.

“I retired from hospice nursing earlier this year, and after being in that industry for 35 years you really appreciate how important sincere human connection is for mental wellbeing,” Ms Smith.

“My neighbours know they can come to me if they get injured, and I recently helped a young woman who had cut her foot, but it’s great that they also know they can reach out to me for a more meaningful conversation.”

One of Sinnika’s neighbours Maureen Rodgers said that she used her sewing skills to help residents with clothing repairs and to make friends.

“I’ve always been a person who likes to help and it’s such a wonderful feeling being able to keep doing what I love, which is sewing, and make great connections with people in my community.

“The best part of living in a community like this is that there is always someone that is looking out for you, it gives you great peace of mind knowing that you’re never far away from a good support network.

Ingenia Rental Village manager Ona Berghan-Wylie said that she has seen how hard the past few months has been on residents, but that their resilience and focus on connectivity has been inspiring.

“Sinnika and Maureen are just two fantastic examples of the community we have here, there have been so many acts of kindness.

“Our new community centre officially opened in February and that obviously had to close over March and April, but it’s so great that a few people at a time can enjoy the space in line with safe social distancing.

“Our residents have always been inclined to socialise with one another, so to have restrictions start to ease will be a welcome relief for many.

With many Aussies having to chase short-stint employment during COVID, a demand for flexible living arrangements has identified a rising need for micro-lease rentals for transient workers.

The average lease length for rental properties in Australia is 12-months, which is proving to be too restrictive for Aussies working transient or seasonal jobs like construction, agricultural support, or truck driving.

Truck Driver Allan Bryce said that he has been living at Ingenia Rental Eight Mile Plains on and off for 20 years using the rental community as a home base due to its flexible short-term accommodation lease model.

“Particularly during COVID, I’ve had to travel more to pick up work, and traditional rental properties don’t offer great flexibility for workers like me,” said Mr Bryce.

“I was working at the Port of Brisbane when COVID hit and the import volume from overseas dried up pretty quickly, so I had to go up to North Queensland to find work.

“Because of the lease format at Ingenia Rental, I was able to give notice, tie up whatever loose ends I had and head up North to do some work on a property for the cane season.

“I’ve only recently moved back to Ingenia Rental following a six-month stint. This is actually my seventh stay; I just keep coming back.

“The location of the community here at Eight Mile Plains is also a winner for me – it’s centrally located, which is important for me as a lot of the work I do is in the transport industry,” Mr Bryce said.

“It’s roughly a 20-minute drive in any direction to where most of the transport centres are located, being either Rocklea, Larapinta, or the Port of Brisbane.

Ingenia Rental Eight Mile Plains Community Manager Ona Berghan-Wylie said that she had seen a rise in transient workers who were chasing employment opportunities during the pandemic.

“We know that people come to us because we offer flexible periodic leases that allow residents to go where the work takes them without the worries or penalties that often come with breaking a lease,” said Ms Berghan-Wylie.

“Our community is low-maintenance, conveniently located and affordable which is a major plus – especially when people travel for work and want to avoid paying rent in multiple places.

“Ingenia is working to redefine rental options for Australia’s short-term and mobile workforce by providing the flexibility and affordability they need, while ensuring they feel at home and part of a community.

“Ultimately our residents come from all walks of life – some for a few months due to work, some on a more permanent basis and some, like Allan, who have regularly returned over a number of years.

“It’s important to us that all residents feel at home and part of a supportive community, regardless of how long or how often they are staying,” Ms Berghan-Wylie said.

With over 29 million registered pets, Australia has one of the highest pet ownership rates in the world – and as these numbers increase with people searching for furry friends during COVID, it’s no surprise that RSPCA Cupcake Day is hitting home for those with little canine and feline sidekicks.

Ingenia Rental Eight Mile Plains residents came together on RSPCA Cupcake Day to raise awareness and funds for the RSPCA.

Community Manager Ona Berghan -Wylie said that many of the residents in the community were very passionate about supporting the RSPCA’s cause to protect abandoned and abused animals.

“The furry and feathered residents of our community are more than just pets, they’re like family, which is why it means a lot to everyone to get involved in RSPCA Cupcake Day.

“Their pets bring them love, companionship and purpose in life which can play a significant part in promoting positive impacts to the pet owners.”

“Having pets around is very therapeutic and a great way for our residents to maintain good mental health, especially during these unprecedent times – they’ve been more important than ever.”

Ingenia Rental – Eight Mile Plains residents supported the cause by hosting a morning tea, raising almost $150, all in aid of the mistreated, abandoned and abused animals protected by the RSPCA.
